Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.
While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
It must have been so hard for Mary, being a new mom without a place to stay or the proper essentials for a new baby. As it grows colder and we gear up to celebrate the birth of the Christ-child, take a moment to remember that Jesus was born the son of a poor, traveling young women. He didn’t have a proper roof, bed, or blanket and Mary didn’t have the resources to provide them at the time. There are people in our county who share Mary and Jesus’ struggle this season.
The Gathering Place Mission is a non-profit organization focused on helping the homeless in Scott County. In Scott County alone there are 405 classified homeless children in need of shelter, food, and clothing, along with hundreds of women. The Gathering Place recognized this problem and is currently in the process of opening an emergency shelter for women and children in Scott County. Their goal is to provide an opportunity for women and/or women and their children to have a safe home during the transition from being homeless to re-starting their lives. The Gathering Place runs fully off of donations. Through donations like yours, the Gathering Place will be able to provide a safe place for these women and children during these tough times in their lives.
